Learning Tools
At Peninsula Toastmasters we use the internationally renowned Toastmaster Training System with its proven program of graduated exercises. We also use a wide range of equipment in helping develop effective speaking skills.
The Toastmaster Training System
The Toastmaster Training System consists, in part, of a series of manuals, the first being the basic manual that all new Toastmasters complete. It consists of ten exercises, beginning from a simple exercise and gradually working up, concentrating on various aspects of effective speaking. Participants are then able to choose from 13 advanced manuals, depending on their interests.
The advanced manuals are: The Entertaining Speaker, Speaking to Inform, Public Relations, The Discussion Leader, Speeches by Management, The Professional Speaker, Technical Presentations, Persuasive Speaking, Communicating on Television, Storytelling, Interpretive Reading, Interpersonal Communications, Special Occasion Speeches and Humorously Speaking. There are three other series of manuals for participants interested in further development: the Leadership Excellence Series, the Better Speaking Series and the Successful Club Series.
Participants also regularly practice impromptu speaking, where the skill of being able to think-ahead-while-speaking is developed. Like learning to ride a bicycle, thinking ahead while speaking seems difficult for many at first but, with practice, can be mastered by everyone.
Participants are also able to choose a leadership development path, which includes guidance and practical experience in presenting educational sessions and club administration. In the advanced leadership path participants receive instruction and practical experience in leadership skills, developing mission and vision, goal-setting and planning, identifying values and team building.
Self Evaluation Using Video
At all sessions participants can choose to have their presentations videoed, with a DVD provided on the night for later viewing. This is a very effective tool for quickly building effective public speaking skills.
Microphones
Participants are also able to develop effective microphone technique, with microphones of various types available. Microphone meetings are held periodically, with participants who choose that training included on the speaking roster.
PowerPoint
Peninsula Toastmasters has its own data projection equipment so participants are able to develop their skills with PowerPoint. It is the only club in WA with this equipment.
